How to Get a Japanese Phone Number for Streaming Services

Some Japanese streaming services require a Japanese mobile number for SMS verification. Which is hella annoying when you just wanna watch some idol content stress free.

I tried a few free sites but none of them worked. Eventually landed on SMS-Man, a pay-per-use service where you temporarily rent a Japanese number to receive a code.

Step 1: Sign Up for SMS-Man

Create a free account. SMS-Man may not send the verification code, so I found it easier to just sign in using Google.

Once you are logged in, you'll be prompted to add some credit ($1-$10). Turn your VPN off while doing this — SMS-Man will block you otherwise.

Step 2: Buy a Number

Go onto the SMS-Man homepage, then search for the specific service you're trying to verify. If it's there, use it — it'll be much cheaper. If not, Any other works but will likely cost more. Mine was $6.34 because the service I wanted wasn't listed.

After that, select Japan as the country.

Hit Buy SMS and you'll get a number like +81 709 385 1128.

Step 3: Enter It

Go onto the streaming service you want to access. Enter the number where it asks for a mobile number and hit send. If it accepts it you'll usually get some kind of confirmation that the code is on its way.

If the site requires domestic format, 11 digits:

  • Drop the +81
  • Add a 0 at the front

+81 709 385 1128 → 07093851128

Step 4: Receive the Code

Go back to SMS-Man and click Receive SMS. The code usually arrives within a few minutes.

Don't cancel too early. Give it at least 3-5 minutes, SMS-Man refunds you if nothing comes through so there's no rush.

If It Doesn't Work

Some numbers just don't receive the SMS. If nothing comes after 5 minutes, cancel (you'll get refunded automatically), buy a new number, and try again.
