My Immersion Set Up
Throughout the year I've experimented with different equipment but finally feel like I've found a setup that works for me. I generally go for premium options, but I've also linked alternatives for those who don't want to spend a quadrillion dollars.
The links below are affiliate links. I figured if I’m going to recommend stuff I use every day anyway, I might as well take the cheeky Amazon commission. It doesn’t cost you guys anything extra and doesn’t affect my recommendations.
Passive Immersion Earphones
I'm using the SHOKZ OpenSwim Pro for passive immersion. They're open-ear earphones that deliver sound through bone conduction.
I use them daily and think they're great for the following reasons:
- They have an MP3 mode so you don't even need a phone
- You can keep them on around your neck during active immersion so they're easy to access when you need them
- The open ear allows you to drive, run, and cycle safely
- They're wireless
Mouse
I'm using the Logitech MX Ergo. The trackball + Bluetooth means I can use the mouse on my armrest or lap desk and not need to get up to click on another video. Strongly recommend if you sit away from your desk.
Less expensive alternative: Logitech ERGO M575. The build quality isn't as good and it uses batteries instead of being rechargeable, but other than that it works exactly the same.
Keyboard
I'm using the Logitech MX Keys. It feels premium and the Bluetooth works seamlessly with no issues. It doesn't come with a Bluetooth adapter, so you'll have to grab one yourself.
The Logitech Pebble Keys 2 works just like the one I mentioned above but for half the price. The build quality isn't as good, but some people prefer how it looks anyway.
Active Immersion Headphones
I'm using the Bose QuietComfort SC. The noise cancelling is great, Bluetooth connects seamlessly, and they're extremely comfortable and lightweight. Strongly recommend.
The Bose QuietComfort Ultra are the more expensive alternative. The build quality is better and the buttons are slightly different.
Pronunciation Training
I'm using the Shure MV7+. It connects directly to your computer via USB, so you don’t need an audio interface or any extra setup.
You can also plug earphones directly into the microphone and hear your own voice in real-time while chorusing or shadowing.
For a mic arm, I'm using the Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP.
